One of the non-point sources significantly
contributing to the
pollution of the Baltic Sea is the agriculture sector,
which is
estimated to account for 30-35 per cent of the total
nitrogen
load to the Baltic.
It is dominated by the consumption of the nitrogen
fertilizers for
agricultural lands. The massive waterborne nitrogen
input to
the Baltic Sea is a major cause
of marine eutrophication.
