2006 Recipients of The Teresa Heinz Scholars for Environmental Research
The Center for the Environment is happy to present the 2006 Cornell University awardees of the Teresa
Heinz Scholars for the Environmental Research Program:
Jason Andras, Ph.D. student, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, The Efficiency of the
Specialist Versus the Fexibility of the Generalist: Measuring the Cost of 'Adaptive
Bleaching' in a Model Coral System
Hannah Shayler, Masters student, Natural Resources, Mercury Outreach: Strategies for
Community Action
The Teresa Heinz Scholars for Environmental Research Program seeks to enrich the public's
understanding of emerging environmental issues and to provide effective solutions for
environmental problems. It is designed to support doctoral dissertation and masters thesis for
research on emerging environmental issues. This prestigious scholarship program is open to
students from Cornell University and eight other universities. A total of 16 one-time, one-year
awards are offered annually. Research must have public policy relevance that increases society's
understanding of environmental problems and their solutions. Please note: CfE assists the Heinz
foundation in the review process, but students apply directly to the Heinz Foundation. Read the

Corridors Protect Biodiversity
In the September 1 issue of Science, a team of scientists led by Ellen Damschen reported on a
large-scale replicated experiment showing that habitat patches connected by corridors increase the
species richness of herbaceous plants. Prior to this research, there was little evidence documenting the
effectiveness of corridors connecting patches of habitat in preserving biodiversity at large scales. The
researchers demonstrated that habitat patches connected by corridors retain more native plant species
than isolated patches, that this difference increases over time, and that corridors do not promote
invasion by exotic species. These findings confirm the validity of corridors as a tool for conservation and

Ecosystem Effects from a Single Species Decline
In the August 11 issue of Science, Cornell ecologist Alexander Flecker and colleagues, including first
author Brad W. Taylor '93, reported on research concerning the flannelmouth characin, a fish harvested
in South America which feeds on the organic matter on river bottoms. The research team removed the
species from a small stretch of a river in Venezuela and found that the flow of organic carbon in the river
dramatically changed. The ecosystem was seriously altered, and other species did not compensate.
During the experiment, organic matter that shades nitrogen-fixing algae was no longer being eaten by
the flannelmouth characin and biomass on the streambed increased 450 percent. The authors
concluded that the loss or decline of just this one species could reverberate throughout the stream's
network and have long-lasting negative feedbacks on the food web, affecting fish populations, algae,
bacteria, insects and other fish species, as well as ecosystem function and the flow of protein to humans
