ANNOUNCEMENTS
Visit By Delegation From Tsinghua University, Beijing, China
Dr. Heping HU, Vice President, Tsinghua University; Dr. Zhongjing WANG, Professor and Vice
Dean of the School of Civil Engineering; Dr. Xiaofeng WU, Professor, Department of Hydraulic
Engineering, will visit the Center for the Environment on October 2 and 3, 2006. Dr. Heping HU
will give the following seminar on campus:
"Runoff-evaporation hydrological model for arid plain oasis and its application in
Tarim River Basin"
on Monday, October 2, 2006, 135 Emerson Hall from 12:20 - 1:10 PM
This seminar is co-hosted by the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, the Department of
Biological and Environmental Engineering and the Center for the Environment.
The Center for the Environment would like to encourage students interested in China and
environmental science to have an opportunity to meet with our visitors. If you are interested in
meeting with our visitors or need additional information, please email Paula Euvrard.
Congratulations to Kathy Mills, 2006 recipient of the A. Stephen Weithman
Award
The Center for the Environment extends its congratulations to Kathy Mills, the 2006 recipient of
the A. Stephen Weithman Award for her paper "Confronting trade-offs associated with
ecosystem-based management: an evaluation of alternative governance arrangements."
Kathy is a Ph.D. student in the department of Natural Resources. She is a 2005 Center for the
Environment Student Environmental Research Grant recipient, and a 2005 Teresa Heinz Scholar
award recipient. The Missouri Chapter and the Socioeconomics Section of the American
Fisheries Society (AFS) sponsor the A. Stephen Weithman Best Student Paper Award in
Socioeconomics. The award is presented for the best platform or poster paper presented by a
student at the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting. Papers are judged on content,
originality, organization, contribution to the field of fisheries science, and overall presentation of
the study. The award winner receives $150 and an award certificate following the annual
meeting. This article is featured at the American Fisheries Society website.
'CfE News and Announcements' debuts as environment-L
The Center for the Environment's electronic newsletter has become an official Cornell Lyris
mailing list (environment-L). The newsletter will continue to function as usual with one mailing
a week including CfE News, Announcements, and RFP listings arriving in your mailbox on
Tuesday at midnight. All existing newsletter members have been automatically added to the new
system and no further action is required.

Global Warming and Genetic Change
A recent article published in Science Magazine reports on comparisons of recent with historical samples
of chromosome inversion frequencies provide opportunities to determine whether genetic change is
tracking climate change in natural populations. A team of scientists determined the magnitude and
direction of shifts over time (24 years between samples on average) in chromosome inversion
frequencies and in ambient temperature for populations of the fly Drosophila subobscura on three
continents. In 22 of 26 populations, climates warmed over the intervals, and genotypes characteristic of
low latitudes (warm climates) increased in frequency in 21 of those 22 populations. Thus, Drosophila
subobscura
is experiencing detectable climate warming on three continents. Environmental warming appears to
have had a genetic impact on these flies. Genetic shifts paralleling climate warming have been reported
recently for a few other insects although on more limited geographic scales. The increasing numbers of
examples documenting genetic, as well as phenotypic responses, to recent climate change are not
surprising from an evolutionary perspective, but nonetheless are disturbing from ecological or economic
ones, because such changes signal inevitable disruptions in the distributions, population dynamics, and
