ANNOUNCEMENTS
In Recent Science News . . . Climate Change
A team, led by James Hansen of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard
Institute for Space Studies, compared measured sea surface temperatures in the Western Pacific
with paleoclimate data. Their analysis suggests that this critical ocean region, and probably the
planet as a whole, is approximately as warm now as at the Holocene maximum and within 1
degree C of the maximum temperature of the past million years. Global warming of more than 1
degree C, relative to 2000, will constitute 'dangerous' climate change as judged from likely
effects on sea level and extermination of species. The team concludes that since a large portion
of human-made CO2 will remain in the air for many centuries, sensible policies must focus on
devising energy strategies that greatly reduce CO2 emissions. Read the full article >>
