Repeat Announcement: 2007 Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished
Environmental Lecturer Announced
Marine Ecologist Jane Lubchenco announced as Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished Environmental Lecturer for
2007
Jane Lubchenco, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor
of Zoology at Oregon State University, has been selected as the Iscol Lecturer for 2007. The Iscol Lecture
will be held on the Cornell campus on Monday, April 23, 2007.
Dr. Jane Lubchenco is an environmental scientist and marine ecologist who is actively engaged in
teaching, research, synthesis and communication of scientific knowledge. She grew up in Colorado,
received her Ph.D. and taught at Harvard University, then 28 years ago moved to Oregon State University.
Her expertise includes ocean ecosystems and the human/environment nexus - biodiversity, climate
change, sustainability science, ecosystem services, marine reserves, coastal marine ecosystems, the
state of the oceans and of the planet.
Impact of Nanotechnology on the Environment
Two new reports, one from the National Nanotechnology Initiative NEHI working group and the
other from the National Research Council "A matter of size," call for expanding research on
understanding the risks of nanomaterials. The reports recommend studying nanomaterial toxicity
for aquatic and terrestrial species; nanomaterials transport, transformation and fate in air, water
and soil; effects on biological and nonbiological factors such as pH, photo-oxidation, etc.; and
developing testing shemes, protocols, and standardized sampling methods. The reports
emphasize that interdisciplinary research is necessary to assess the potential of nanomaterials to
disperse into the environment. In parallel, RFP's are currently posted by EPA on the same topic:

Sources, Composition, and Health Effects of Coarse Particulate Matter (Closing Date:
November 30, 2006)

opportunities.
Applications for 2007 AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leader Award now
available
The American Institute of Biological Sciences announced that applications for the 2007 AIBS
Emerging Public Policy Leader Award (EPPLA) are now available. The EPPLA was established
by AIBS in 2003 as a way to recognize and further the science policy interests of graduate
students in the biological sciences and science education. For the past two years, Cornell

students have won this award: Madhura Kulkarni, a doctoral candidate in biogeochemistry and
environmental biocomplexity in 2006, and Karen Deen Laughlin, a doctoral candidate in ecology
and evolutionary biology in 2005. Read more on the CfE website. Application available on the

In Recent Science News . . . Global Loss of Ocean Biodiversity
A team led by Boris Worm of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, analyzed the effects of
changes in marine biodiversity on fundamental ecosystem services by combining available data
from sources ranging from small-scale experiments to global fisheries. Overall, rates of resource
collapse increased and recovery potential, stability, and water quality decreased exponentially
with declining diversity. Restoration of biodiversity, in contrast, increased productivity fourfold
and decreased variability by 21% on average. Worm and his colleagues concluded that marine
biodiversity loss is increasingly impairing the ocean's capacity to provide ecosystem services
such as food, maintain water quality, and recover from perturbations. The team called for the
creation of new marine reserves, sustainable management of fishing, and tighter control of
pollution. Science
quoted Jane Lubchenco of Oregon State University in Corvallis, and 2007 Cornell Iscol
Lecturer, who considers this study "a landmark paper."
