Repeat Announcement - Cornell Invasive Species Forum
Thursday, May 18th, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Whetzel Seminar Room, 404 Plant Science Building
Advance Registration Requested
Invasive species represent one of the greatest environmental challenges for the 21 century,
causing tremendous losses in agriculture and wild lands. The control and mitigation of effects of
invasive species requires not only an understanding of their basic biology, but also of the
environmental complexity of the habitats and interactions in invaded areas. The focus of this
forum will be on research at Cornell University, structured to inform and build collaborations at
Cornell, inform community members of our efforts, and begin to help develop a strategic vision
for the future. This campus event is being led by Anurag Agrawal of the Department of Ecology
and Evolutionary Biology and sponsored by the Center for the Environment. Those interested in
attending the forum are asked to please register by emailing Michèle van de Walle at
mjv28@cornell.edu.
For more information, please review the Invasive Species Forum website >>
Repeat Announcement - Memorandum of Understanding
With the Ãcole Normale Supérieure in Paris
To facilitate international academic exchange, to develop academic and scientific relationships,
and in support of collaborative research activities, Ãcole Normale Supérieure, Paris,
France, and Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a framework for cooperative programs. This MOU
supports the intentions of Cornell University and ENS to form a strategic partner relationship
between Cornell University Center for the Environment (CfE) and ENS Centre
d'Enseignement et de Recherches sur l'Environnement et la Societ (CERES), that will
strengthen teaching and research in the environmental field and will broaden the international
experiences of the faculty and students of both institutions. For more information please contact
Michèle van de Walle at mjv28@cornell.edu.

Cornell Researchers Report on Economic Value of Insect Services In the April 2006 edition of
BioScience, researchers John E. Losey (Cornell Department of Entomology) and Mace Vaughn (Cornell
M.S. '99 and current conservation director at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in Portland,
Oregon) report on 'The Economic Value of Ecological Services Provided by Insects'. The study found that
native insects are food for wildlife that supports a $50 billion recreation industry, provide more than $4.5
billion in pest control, pollinate $3 billion in crops and clean up grazing lands, which saves ranchers some

$380 million a year. Losey and Vaughan's study focused on the economic value of four particular services
- wildlife nutrition, pest control, pollination and dung burial - selected because robust data were available
for an analysis. Losey and Vaughan compared the values of each service at current levels of function to
theoretical levels if these services were absent.
