Announcements
2006 Recipients of CfE Student Environmental Research Grants
The Center for the Environment is happy to announce seven awardees of the 2006 CfE Student
Environmental Research Grants Program:
Jill Anderson, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Angela Carter, Government
Julie Major, Crop and Soil Sciences
Megan O'Rourke, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Sarah Reilly, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Anna Savage, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Hannah Shayler, Natural Resources
This program is designed to select proposals that make clear enhancements to ongoing or
planned student research. The program favors proposals that promote interdisciplinary learning,
use of new techniques and technology, extend the student research to users or policy makers, and
add broader exposure of the study outside academia. CfE student grants are made possible by
donations from the many Cornell alumni and supporters of CfE seeking to help students in the
environmental sciences. Please visit the Student Environmental Research Grants Website for
more information.
Congratulations to Madhura Kulkarni, 2006 AIBS Emerging Public Policy
Leader
The Center for the Environment extends its congratulations to Madhura Kulkarni, who was
recently named one of two 2006 Emerging Public Policy Leaders of The American Institute of
Biological Sciences (AIBS), a Washington-based nonprofit scientific association. Madhura is
working toward a doctorate in biogeochemistry and environmental biocomplexity at Cornell. Her
doctoral research is a study on nitrogen pollution management. She has received a variety of
awards, including a 2005 CfE Student Environmental Research Grant. Madhura received a trip
to Washington, D.C., where she participated in a two-day congressional visit event sponsored by
the Biological and Ecological Sciences Coalition (BESC), and the Coalition on Funding
Agricultural Research Missions (CoFARM). She met with members of Congress and attended
briefings by key government officials, as well as a reception honoring Representatives Vernon J.
Ehlers (R-MI) and Rush Holt (D-NJ) for their work on behalf of science. CfE is a member of the
AIBS, an umbrella organization for the biological sciences. Read more about AIBS >>
