In Recent Science News . . . Polar Science
Earth's Polar Regions supply us with information about our planet's past and future. Earlier this
month, scientists from dozens of nations launched a 2-year research initiative called the
International Polar Year (IPY) with the goal of better understanding where the Arctic and
Antarctica have been, where they are going, and how changes at the poles might affect
humankind. Polar processes exert a great influence on ecological and biogeochemical cycles.
Ocean circulation, atmospheric composition, and sea levels are all linked to conditions at the
poles. A special issue of Science
magazine explores some of the more vibrant research under way at the ends of the Earth.
