ANNOUNCEMENTS
New Invasive Species List-Serve
A new low-traffic list-serve (invasivespecies-l) has been created as a mechanism to share
information, ideas, and news related to invasive species research and extension activities at
Cornell. Anurag Agrawal, who helped organize the recent invasive species forum, will serve as
the list moderator. If you want to sign up, send an email to lyris@cornell.edu with following
plain-text in the body of the message (insert your name within the quotation marks): join
invasivespecies-l "Ezra Cornell"
Recent Science News: Biodiversity Improves Ecosystem Stability
In the June 1, 2006 issue of Nature, Univ. of Minnesota researcher David Tilman, et al., report
on a long-term grassland study of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
A topic of debate for more than 50 years, this study is the first to provide enough data, gathered
over 168 grassland plots for 10 years, to confirm the theory that biodiversity's improves
ecosystem stability. The research team directly controlled the number of perennial prairie species
while the growing-season climate varied considerably, causing year-to-year variation in
abundances of plant species and in ecosystem productivity. The data analysis concluded that
ecosystems containing many different plant species are more productive and are better able to
withstand and recover from climate extremes, pests and disease over long periods of time.
Tilman states "High diversity allows us to produce biofuels with low inputs, and this means that
we can get more energy from an acre of land, year after year, with high certainty." Read the full
