Factors Influencing Invasive Fish Prosperity
In the June 2006 issue of BioScience, Peter Moyle and Michael Marchetti report on using
freshwater fish data collected in California to model the success factors of potential invasive fish
species. The researchers found no set of characteristics that predicted success for all fish
invasions. It was possible, however, to determine five factors that would best predict invasion
success, namely: (a) a history of successful establishment outside the species' native range; (b)
characters that promote success at multiple stages of the invasion process (e.g., high
physiological tolerance); (c) invaded habitat that more or less matches the alien's native habitat;
(d) high fish species richness, including other alien fishes; and (e) propagule size exceeding 100
individuals. The researchers reported that a wide variety of characteristics, often confined to a
particular set of species or environments, proved to be important decision variables. Read the full
