Prey Evolution on the Time Scale of Predator-Prey Dynamics
In the July 11, 2006 edition of the National Academy of Science's journal PNAS, a group of researchers
from Cornell University's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology reports on work testing the
interplay between genetic change and predator-prey densities. The group was able to directly observe
changes in the genotype frequencies of the algae Chlorella vulgaris by using microsatellite-DNA
markers, as the abundances of the algae and their consumer, Brachionus calyciflorus, change through
time. A mathematic model prediction was confirmed by observing that the superior competitor
dominated initially, and as the rotifer densities increased, the more predator-resistant clone
predominated. This research is significant in that it gives clear evidence to support the notion that
ecological and evolutionary dynamics work in similar time scales and the interactions between the two
systems are important factors.
