Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Effects Lower in Open-Air Trials
Increased temperature and decreased soil moisture are expected to reduce global crop yields by 2050,
but it has been predicted that increased fertilization from the rising carbon dioxide concentrations would
offset the losses. New data from large-scale open-air field tests reported in the 30 June 2006 issue of
Science
Magazine casts serious doubts on these previous predictions and suggests that free-air concentration
enrichment is much lower than previously believed. In the article entitled Food for Thought:
Lower-Than-Expected Crop Yield Stimulation with Rising CO2 Concentrations, Stephen P. Long, et al.
report that open-air trials of elevated CO2 levels enhanced yield by ~50% less than reported in previous
enclosure studies. Read the full text (requires CU connection) >>
