Repeat Announcement: 2007 Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished
Environmental Lecturer Announced
Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and
Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University, has been selected as the 2007
Iscol Lecturer. The Iscol Lecture will be held on the Cornell campus on Monday, April 23, 2007.
Dr. Lubchenco is an environmental scientist and marine ecologist who is actively engaged in
teaching, research, synthesis and communication of scientific knowledge. She grew up in
Colorado, received her Ph.D. and taught at Harvard University, then 28 years ago moved to
Oregon State University. Her expertise includes ocean ecosystems and the human/environment
nexus - biodiversity, climate change, sustainability science, ecosystem services, marine reserves,
coastal marine ecosystems, the state of the oceans and of the planet.

In Recent Science News . . . Mercury Contamination
A team led by Charles Driscoll (Syracuse University) studied atmospheric mercury deposition in
Eastern North America. The mercury species due to direct emissions and reemissions of
anthropogenic sources have variable atmospheric residence times, which influence their
atmospheric transport and deposition patterns. High concentrations of mercury were observed in
freshwater biota of forested regions. Through fish consumption, humans and wildlife are
exposed to methylmercury, which markedly bioaccumulates up the freshwater food chain.
Mercury concentrations in yellow perch fillets and piscivorous wildlife are high enough to cause
adverse behavioral, physiological, and reproductive effects.

In Recent Science News . . . Endangered Fish Species
Recovery
In the past 100 years, 27 species of North America fish have become extinct. A total of 149 fish
species and distinct populations are currently under federal government protection provided by
the US Endangered Species Act, and many have been listed for decades. However, Mark Bain,
Cornell University, Natural Resources Department and Director of the Center for the
Environment, and his colleagues reported that the population of shortnose sturgeon, which lives
in large rivers and estuaries along the Atlantic coast of North America, has increased by more

than 400 percent in the Hudson River since the 1970s. This analysis demonstrates that even in a
human dominated ecosystem associated with one of the world's largest and most prominent
cities, public efforts for endangered species conservation can work, and will result in recovery.
