ANNOUNCEMENTS
Applications for 2007 AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leader Award now
available
AIBS has announced that applications for the 2007 AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leader Award
(EPPLA) are now available. The EPPLA is an opportunity for graduate students in the biological
sciences to receive first-hand experience in the policy arena. AIBS pays travel costs and
expenses for 1-2 EPPLA recipients to participate in a Biological and Ecological Sciences
Coalition Congressional Visits Day (CVD) in Washington, D.C. on April 18-19, 2007 (dates
subject to change). This is an annual event that brings scientists and science educators to
Washington, D.C. to raise visibility and support for the biological sciences. The EPPLA
recipient(s) will attend briefings by key officials from the White House and Congress and a
reception honoring members of Congress for their work on behalf of biology. Participants will
also meet with members of Congress and their staff to explain the importance of federal support
for scientific research. Read more on the CfE website. Application available on the AIBS
website.
In Recent Science News . . . Agriculture and Biodiversity
A team of scientists led by S. Butler, University of Reading, UK, studied the impact of novel
farming practices on biodiversity and ecosystem services (Science 315, 381, 9 January 2007).
They used farmland birds as a model system, and were able to predict each species' current
conservation status and population growth rate associated with past changes in agriculture. They
then assessed the potential impact on biodiversity of two controversial land uses, genetically
modified herbicide-tolerant crops and agri-environment schemes. This trait-based approach
could have a broad range of applications in agricultural ecosystems and beyond. It could
contribute greatly to the economic evaluation of proposed agricultural changes that alter the
functioning of ecosystem services through their impact on biodiversity. [Science 9 January 2007:

In Recent Science News . . . Paleoclimate studies and role of
the Asian Monsoons
The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) - an oscillatory mode of coupled ocean-atmosphere variability -
causes climatic extremes and socio-economic hardship throughout the tropical Indian Ocean
region. There is much debate about how the IOD interacts with the El Nino/Southern Oscillation
(ENSO) and the Asian monsoon. Abram and colleagues presented in Nature a study of past

climate change in Indonesia that includes the Asian monsoon. Climate information is preserved
in the geochemistry of huge, rapidly growing corals off Sumatra to study past events in the
Indian Ocean. By analyzing several geochemical tracers in annually banded coral skeletons, the
authors were able to reconstruct month-by-month changes in temperature and drought. The coral
records and model simulations demonstrated that both ENSO and the Asian monsoon are capable
of influencing drought dynamics in the eastern IOD sector. These interactions imply that the
socioeconomic impacts of projected future changes in Asian monsoon strength may extend
throughout Australasia. In Indonesia in particular, drought intensification could bring significant
challenges to conservation management, natural resources, and on rural livelihoods. [Nature 445,
