Vegetation Reported as Significant Methane Source
In the Jan. 12th edition of Nature magazine, Keppler et al. report the surprising finding that
terrestrial plants emit large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Keppler, of the Max Planck
Institute for Nuclear Physics, estimated that living plants release between 60m and 240m tons of
methane per year, with the largest part coming from tropical areas. These findings help account
for the observations from space of inexplicable large plumes of methane above tropical forests.
Methane is second only to carbon dioxide in its role in gobal warming due to the greenhouse
effect. These results will have implications for Kyoto Protocol budgets as reforestation efforts
might be considered as a methane sources rather than a methane sinks, as previously assumed.
