In Recent Science News . . . Sea Change driven by Climate
Ecosystems along the continental shelf waters of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean are experiencing
rapid and significant changes. Charles Greene, director of the Ocean Resources and Ecosystems
Program in Cornell's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, explains that although the
decline of cod from overfishing has played a role in the ecosystem shift, climate changes are
another major contributor. Since the late 1980s, pulses of freshwater from the Arctic have led to
the freshening of seawater along the Northwest Atlantic shelf. This fresher, less dense water
remains relatively shallow for a longer period of time, allowing for growth in both the
phytoplankton and zooplankton populations during the autumn. Greene concludes, "We suggest
that, with or without the collapse of cod, a bottom-up, climate driven regime shift would have
taken place in the Northwest Atlantic during the 1990s." [Science 23 February 2007: Vol. 315.
