**Colloquy on Environmental Sustainability Research Frontiers.* Purpose: Define the
scope of environmental sustainability science, identify research challenges, and describe
scientific frontiers.
**Working Group on Environmental Instruments and Capabilities.* Purpose: Identify
critical needs for campus environmental research facilities and instruments, and develop
strategies to achieve highest priorities.
Science Magazine Reports Acceleration in Greenland Ice Sheet Melt
A study published in Science
magazine finds that the Greenland Ice Sheet is shrinking faster than researchers had previously
thought. The runoff from just this one part of the Earth could raise sea levels around the world by
a quarter of an inch per decade. As the article entitled Changes in the Velocity Structure of the
Greenland Ice Sheet
describes how the mass balance between the interior of the ice sheet and its margins helps
determine the amount of water contributing to the rise in global sea-level. At 1.7 million km2, up
to 3 km thick, and a little smaller than Mexico, the Greenland Ice Sheet would raise global sea
level by about 7 m if it melted completely and take anywhere from a hundred to a few thousand
years. A comparison of their results to past data shows that there has been a widespread
acceleration of ice flow since 1996, that mass loss has doubled in that time, and that ice
dynamics, which are particularly dependent on warming, dominate the rapid retreat of
Greenland's glaciers. The new data, derived largely from remote-sensing satellites, suggests that
current estimates of global sealevel rise over the next century, of about 0.5 ± 0.4m, are
underestimates. Read the perspective report by J. Dowdeswell.
