ANNOUNCEMENTS
Repeat Announcement: 2007 Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished
Environmental Lecturer Announced
Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and
Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University, has been selected as the 2007
Iscol Lecturer. The Iscol Lecture will be held on the Cornell campus on Monday, April 23, 2007.
Dr. Lubchenco is an environmental scientist and marine ecologist who is actively engaged in
teaching, research, synthesis and communication of scientific knowledge. She grew up in
Colorado, received her Ph.D. and taught at Harvard University, then 28 years ago moved to
Oregon State University. Her expertise includes ocean ecosystems and the human/environment
nexus - biodiversity, climate change, sustainability science, ecosystem services, marine reserves,
coastal marine ecosystems, the state of the oceans and of the planet.

In Recent Science News . . . Loss of Predatory Sharks has a
Cascading Effect
Fewer big sharks in the oceans mean that shellfish like the bay scallop may become scarce,
according to an article in the March 30 issue of the journal Science. A team of American and
Canadian ecologists, led by the late Ransom Myers of Dalhousie University, found that
overfishing the largest predatory sharks along the Atlantic Coast has led to an explosion of their
ray, skate, and small shark prey species. Rays eat large quantities of bay scallops, oysters, and
clams, and their increased population has all but wiped out bay scallops in many places. "This
ecological event is having a large impact on local communities that depend so much on healthy
fisheries," says Charles Peterson, a professor of marine sciences biology and ecology at the
Institute of Marine Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and co-leader of the
study. [Science 30 March 2007: Vol. 315. no. 5820, pp. 1846 - 1850]
