ANNOUNCEMENTS
In Recent Science News . . . CU professor's biodegradable
composites going into production
Anil Netravali, Cornell professor of fiber science and apparel design, has created a greener,
stronger, cheaper alternative to particleboard. Production of his cost-competitive composites will
soon begin using soy, flax, and bamboo grown in New York state. Standard particleboard uses
resins based on formaldehyde, but the resin for the biodegradable composites can be made from
soybean meal left over from the manufacture of biodiesel. Additionally, composites will be
formed by compression molding to the exact size and shape needed thus reducing manufacturing
costs. Netravali's plant-based composites will soon be in commercial products promising to save
landfill space, reduce carcinogens in homes and workplaces, and boost the economy of central
New York.
