Merauke Activity, Method of the Merauke Activity)
- Progress of the FAO-GEF Project International y:
1. Other countries have developed to the find alternative by-catch reduction devices;
2. In Indonesia, the obligation to instal by-catch reduction devices for the industry scale fisheries has
been regulated. Therefore, the next priority wil be focused on smal scale fisheries;
3. The 2005 year demonstration activity is considered to be the last one, the next activity wil be
focused on technology modification, TED/JTEDs construction, mesh figure (diamond or square),
etc;
4. For the successful of the FAO-GEF Project until the implementation phase, it is necessary to
determine a certain area for the pilot project;
5. The future activity (2006 2007) wil be focused on smal scale fisheries in Makassar Strait with
East Kalimantan as based area.

- Work Plan of the Merauke Activity

Merauke;
4. The Roma FAO-GEF Project officer wil attend the workshop and the SEAFDEC team also wil be
invited for the technical assistance.

- Methods of the Merauke Activity
1. The demonstration training is considered to use the double rigged shrimp trawl fishing vessels, with
the instal ment practice both in-land and on-board;
2. During the workshop, the new TEDs regulation issued by USA wil be disseminated (double flaps).
Meanwhile, the JTEDs construction wil be demonstrated is semi-curve rigid sorting with 1cm;
1,5cm; and 2 cm distance;
3. For the data col ecting, it's hoped to involve the student doing some researches;
4. The data analyzing is hoped to be improved.

Substitution of National Project Coordinator for FAO-GEF "Reduction of Environmental Impact from
Shrimp Trawling, through The Introduction of By-catch Reduction Devices and Change of Management
(FAO symbol EP/GLO/201/GEF)".
- Regarding to the closed-time left, the workshop in Merauke previously planned to held in September 5th
 10th, 2005 was suggested to be rescheduled by FAO Rep in Indonesia by the next 2  3 weeks later;

c) September 5th, 2005 (The workshop's curriculum and method)
- General preview of the FAO-GEF Project in Indonesia were pronounced by Mr. Agustinus Anung W
(Marine Fisheries Research Institute-BRPL, Jakarta). The briefing was based on the result of previous
meeting between Mr. Benni H. Sormin, Director of Fishing Vessels and Fishing Gears, National Project
Coordinator, Fishing Technology Development Center-BPPI, Semarang and Marine Fisheries Research
Institute-BRPL, Jakarta;
- Regarding to the activity in BRPL at the same time, both Steering Committees from BRPL (Mr.
Agustinus Anung W and Mr. Mahisworo) couldn't join the workshop in Merauke;
- To replace both SC from BRPL, it was suggested to involve 2 (two) persons from BPPI Semarang (Mr.
Agus Suryadi and Mr. Salatun) as trainers;
- TED/ JTEDs wil be instal ed during the workshop, were:
a. Semi curve rigid sorting grid JTED with with 1cm; 1,5cm; and 2 cm distance;
b. TED as new regulation issued by US.
- Both the TED and JTEDs wil be prepared by BPPI Semarang (Mr. Suhariyanto);

catch Reduction Devices in Merauke.
3.1. Time and Place

The Demonstration And Training On By-Catch Reduction Devices "Reduction of Environmental Impact
From Tropical Shrimp Trawling, Through The Introduction of By-catch Reduction Technologies and
Change of Management" was held either in-land and on-board training from November 28th December
5th , 2005 in Asmat hotel Merauke, Papua Province. Meanwhile, the on-board demonstration and training
had been in the adjacent of Komoran waters, Arafura Sea.
3.2. Trainers and Trainees
The trainers of this workshop are:
a. Fishing Technology Development Centre, Semarang

:
3 persons
c. SEAFDEC, Thailand
:
3 persons
d. FAO  Rome

The trainees of these workshops are (detail as attached):
a. Trainees from Merauke
: 13 persons
b. Trainees from Jayapura
: 12 persons
c. Trainees from Jakarta
: 15 persons

3.3. Recommendations
1) To reduce the environmental impact from trawl net, a better col aboration and coordination between
stake holders; government, researchers, fisheries trawl industry, fishermen, NGOs need to be
improved;
2) To prepare The Minister Decree on TEDs/JTEDs instal ation both on shrimp trawl net and fish trawl net
for the sustainable fisheries management;
3) To improve the dissemination and compliance on TEDs/JTEDs instal ation on trawl net to enlarge the
export market.

5. Give other general comments on the current status of the shrimp-trawling industry.
Almost al of the shrimp trawl vessels have instal ed the TED on their trawl net. Nevertheless, it isn't perfect
yet, so more extension to get a better performance is needed.
