Dear GIWA friends
This special edition of the Newsletter is ded-
icated to the GIWA General Assembly. The
GIWA General Assembly is a major milestone
in the GIWA project. It is the manifestation
of our global network and a proof that GIWA
is operational. The GIWA assessment work is
ongoing on the global scale and results are
starting to come in. Being the Project
Manager I am proud of all your work, the

global network and our global operation. Our
progress has been made possible by the hard
work done by all our sub-regional task forces, focal points and
experts. I thank you all for your dedication and the effort you have
put into the GIWA project.
I am also convinced that the General Assembly will be a great
inspiration to you all. I look forward to participate in discussions
and exchange of experience with you all. The GA will be a signifi-
cant boost to our operations. The GIWA project is by far complet-

GIWA signs Memorandum of Co-operation with the Russian Academy of Science
A scientific co-ordinating commit-

ordinating committee.
Under this agreement important
work has already started and working
relations have been established with a

Progress in the Northern Hemisphere
In the Northern Hemisphere the scoping results are ready in all eli-
gible areas and the common finding is that pollution, especially
eutrophication, is considered the main concern. However, in some
regions experts foresee significant improvements. The overexploita-
tion of fisheries and other living resources as well as habitat and
community destructions are considered high priority concerns in
many of the regions. The future does not seem to bring any
improvements; on the contrary the situation is likely to get worse.
Status of Assessments in the Southern
Hemisphere

Nearly all assessments in Southern Hemisphere are now underway.
With the exception of a few Sub-regions in the Middle East and
South Asia, all sub-regions in the Southern Hemisphere have start-
ed their Scoping and Scaling. Several Sub-regions have also com-
pleted this first phase of the GIWA program. Examples of such
regions are Agulhas Current, Benguela Current, Somali Current,
Gulf of Guinea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, Coral Sea and Great

Barrier Reef.
