The Executive Secretariat of the Interim Guinea Current
Commission extend their warm greetings and best wishes for
the year 2008 to our esteemed readers.
This edition and subsequent ones of the IGCC Newsletter will
feature activities in the sixteen project Countries.
The Newsletters will also highlight implementation of the
six ongoing national demonstration projects (Côte d'Ivoire,
Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon).

The Fifth Session of the Scientific Sub-Committee (SSC) of

Ghana also represented the interest of IGCC/GCLME in his
capacity as the National Fisheries Expert of the IGCC/GCLME.
Mr Quaatey who is also the Chairman of the Small Pelagics
South Working Group (Guinea Bissau - Angola), presented
the results of assessment done by the Group at the Session
and activities undertaken by the IGCC/GCLME during the
intersession.
The Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME)
project was presented by Mr. Quaatey. He also presented the
activities undertaken by the Project during the intersession
period to the Sub-Committee. Mr. Quaatey briefly described
the Project's objectives and collaboration activities with FAO
on fisheries resources surveys and related activities.

As a way of Building Capacity of local scientists, the Project
organized a series of workshops for scientists in the region. The
Scientific Sub-Committee was informed that at the Ministerial
Meeting of the Project in December 2006 it was agreed to
transform the Project into the Interim Guinea Current
Commission and create Advisory Bodies.
Plans of activities for 2008 of the Project include Training
Workshop on Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management using EwE
software, Workshop on Management of the Shared Sardinella
stocks off Gabon - Angola, Survey Data Analysis in collaboration
with FAO and EAF-Nansen Project.
According to Mr. Quaatey, the fifth Session of CECAF Scientific
Sub-Committee was a success. It is clear from the assessments
done by the various Working Groups that most of the fishery
stocks in the CECAF Region are either overexploited or fully
exploited. There is therefore the need for implementation of

recommended management measures for a recovery of the
overexploited fishery resources. The Meeting offered the
opportunity to know the activity of projects in the CECAF
Region and to forster linkages between projects to avoid
duplication of activities. There was also the need for the various
sub-regional fisherybodies in the region to collaborate.
IMO WORKSHOP ON CONTINGENCY PLANNING
POINTE NOIRE, CONGO, 10 - 14 DEC. 2007.
A Regional Workshop on Contingency Planning was organized
by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Pointe
Noire, Congo from 10-14 December, 2007. Dr. Jacques Abe,
