caribbean LME newsletter for June 2005
As the second semester nears its end we reflect on the many activities of April and May. We had distinguished visitors, faculty and technical staff attended various workshops as participants and trainers, and students went on field trips. Soon the (relative) quiet of summer will be here on campus. However, our students will be busy all around the Caribbean doing their research so as to complete their degrees. Already we are beginning to deal with the applicants for the next academic year.

Over the past two months CERMES has participated in a number of regional and international meetings. We have also received funds in our quest for scholarships to be awarded to students in the names of persons who have contributed prominently to resource management locally and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Increasing the output and availability of our publications, including the Connections is another aim that received attention.

The second semester is well under way at CERMES. Students are taking their last few courses before going on overseas field trips and starting their own research projects. The Climate Change group will be making a trip to Belize thanks to collaboration with the Climate Change Centre there, while the Coastal and Marine Management class will go to the Grenadines islands. The field trips have become an important part of the learning process in which students have the opportunity to ground their knowledge through practical experience.

This is the period of summer slow down at CERMES. Taught courses are finished for the year and students are doing their research around the region. Whether the student is hosted by an organisation in an internship, is directly under the supervision of CERMES faculty, or is being supervised by an associate of CERMES, the emphasis is on the student experiencing meaningful research. The time allocated is limited (only 3 months including write-up), but much can be accomplished in this period to prepare a person for the worlds of work or further academic excellence.
