• The Black Sea Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis identified nutrient pollution as
the most serious problem that has lead to the ecological breakdown experienced
in the Black Sea over the past few decades. The GEF Strategic Partnership was
established in 2001 in order to encourage public and private sector
investments in nutrient reduction, notably industrial and urban wastewater
treatment, agricultural nutrient pollution control and wetland restoration in
the Black Sea and Danube Basin.
