Flood Management
Human settlements, when possible, are commonly established in the proximity of rivers and lakes, due they provide a water supply, rich soils and even forms of transportation. These areas often experiences floods, which may have positive effects such as replenishing wetlands, recharging groundwater and support fisheries and agriculture systems. Unfortunately, floods can also severely compromise the health, economy and safety of the people living in these areas. The negative impacts produced by floods can by amplified in regions with inadequate understanding of flood risks and management. A wide range of activities and agencies are involved in the successful implementation of flood management strategies. They involve individuals, families and communities along with a cross-section of civil society such as research institutions, governments and voluntary organizations.
